Statement

Having been trained in the sciences, I have come to understand the material world through the idealizations of physical models.   Physical models are the universals that have helped us understand nature, through reason and rationality.  In contrast, the visual language of art can express other forms of universals that constitute human existence, ones based on emotion and memory.  In ceramic sculpture, I express these romantic universals primarily by means of narrative human figures. I believe that the figurative form, with its accompanying expressions, is the best cross-cultural means of communication. Narratives interest me because storytelling is a universally human way to convey information. The protagonist is the distilled heart of every story, so many of my works are representations of mythological figures, though the mythology ranges from Catholic to Greek to my own.
